Leading advisory firm Sherpa Technology Group today announced the appointment of Peter Detkin, a pioneer in the field of technology and intellectual property (“IP”) strategy, to the role of Senior Advisor. This announcement coincides with Sherpa Technology Group’s rebrand from 3LP Advisors, reflecting its role in advising clients at the intersection of business, technology and IP.  The name change will become effective immediately.

Mr. Detkin is a founder of Intellectual Ventures, a multi-billion dollar fund that invests in invention and currently holds over 40,000 patents. He will remain involved with the company. Prior to founding Intellectual Ventures, Mr. Detkin was a Vice President at Intel Corporation, where he oversaw Intel’s patent, licensing and litigation departments. Before that, he was a partner at the law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. Mr. Detkin was recently named the second most influential “IP market maker” in the world by Intellectual Asset Management magazine. Mr. Detkin’s knowledge and deal experience will bolster the firm’s ability to offer business strategy and transaction execution services to its varied roster of clients, which includes Fortune 500 companies, emerging technology companies, investors, and investment banks.

“Since 2008, 3LP has been offering advisory services to help Boards and management utilize technology and intellectual property to compete in their chosen markets. We have decided to rebrand ourselves as Sherpa Technology Group to emphasize our role as an experienced guide that enables our clients to reach the peak and achieve their ultimate objectives,” said Ralph Eckardt, Managing Partner of Sherpa Technology Group and former head of The Boston Consulting Group’s IP Strategy Practice. “The image of the “sherpa” resonates with us because it highlights our role as a trusted fellow traveler, and our commitment to helping our clients succeed by offering in-depth knowledge and practical experience that will enable them to reach the summit.”

“Sherpa Technology Group’s diverse expertise and collaborative approach separates it from the dozens of other IP consulting shops,” said Peter Detkin. “Its professionals have unmatched credibility, experience and breadth of knowledge to advise senior management and Boards of Directors on critical business issues at the intersection of technology and IP, including both strategy development and technology transactions. Sherpa Technology Group is the premier advisory firm in this space, and I’m excited to add my knowledge and transaction experience to the firm.”

“We are pleased to welcome Peter Detkin – a highly-regarded visionary and innovator – to our team,” said Kevin Rivette, Managing Partner of Sherpa Technology Group, former Vice President at IBM Corporation, and former Senior Advisor to The Boston Consulting Group. “Peter and I have known each other and worked together for 30 years and are excited to join forces at the same firm.  I could not have a higher level of respect for him personally and his accomplishments. His entrepreneurial spirit and strong IP and technology expertise make us stronger and add new dimensions to our client offering.”

I agree that hedge funds don’t do anything and are just promoting rent-seeking behavior. However, the “there are much worse things” argument isn’t really an argument. It’s a red herring.

angry dude – not apologetic. Pointing out that hedge funds and big tech are the infringers and hedge funds do more harm than good, they both heavily lobby to get away with what they do and often harm small business. Pointing out the hypocrisy.

    IPdude @3

I don’t get your apologetic tone

What’s wrong with IP valuation/trading/enforcement ecosystem (provided IP is a real one and not a fake like those zillions of worthless junk patents issued to googles and apples of this world on rectangular phones and pinch to zoom alike patent garbage) ???

They have trading in futures and futures on futures or whatever financial scams they invented, but trading in real IP assets is wrong ???

If Edison or Tesla lived today they would already jump off the bridge

    Sad, very sad…

    Dude,

You obviously never invented anything of importance in your entire life

Cause if you did (like many of the readers of this blog) then you might be thankful to those evil “patent trolls” –
at least they used to give some money to original inventors (up until a few years ago – thanks to relentless efforts of SV infingers lobby and VERY receptive obama/congress/scotus/you name it branch of US government)

I am very serious – you should be thankful to those patent trolls for some of the things you use every day

Inventor Woes – hedge funds do not produce or manufacture any products. They manipulate markets while producing nothing. In fact, when they short stocks or sectors (as they did in 2008) it can and has exacerbated market slides considerably. I don’t hear the big tech companies calling them trolls – even though they have had a greater impact on the economy than NPEs. Hedge funds have hurt the economy and the average consumer by a much greater margin than NPEs. Not defending NPEs but at least they are buying and monetizing an asset (patents). There are greater evils to address, if that’s what your concerned with.

    Isn’t Intellectual Ventures a troll?
