Zies Widerman & Malek is a law firm with headquarters in Brevard County, Florida.  The firm practices in the fields of Civil and Commercial Litigation, Mediation, Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, Corporate and Business Law.  The attorneys at Zies Widerman & Malek assist clients in both State and Federal courts, and also in out-of-court arbitration, mediation, and other negotiations. Beginning in 2008 Zies Widerman & Malek began to increasingly expand into the intellectual property arena, and at the start of 2009 prominent patent attorney, Gene Quinn, the founder of IPWatchdog.com, joined the firm.  In the months ahead Zies Widerman & Malek will open a Washington, DC office that will be headed by Gene Quinn.  The DC Office of Zies, Widerman & Malek will primarily focus on Patents, Trademarks and Copyright issues.  With close proximity to the United States Patent & Trademark Office this DC Office will be ideally able to assist clients as they seek to obtain both patents and trademarks.

G. Philip J. Zies

G. Philip J. Zies primarily focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation, contract drafting and review, and business and corporate litigation.  He also represents clients in all aspects of real estate transactions, including closings, real estate litigation, land use planning and litigation.  Philip graduated from Rollins College in 1990 and from the Stetson University School of Law in 1993. Philip was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1993, the New York Bar in 1997, and the Federal Middle District of Florida Bar in 1997.  Philip is also an inventor himself and he holds a patent on his invention. He enjoys inventing, along with collecting rare books, coins, and vintage video games. Philip is married to his wife, Lynn, and they have two children and two grandchildren.

 

Scott Widerman

Scott Widerman delivers a full range of litigation in both state and federal courts. Scott’s area of practice includes corporate litigation, civil litigation, bankruptcy, entertainment, and land use for leading businesses throughout the state of Florida.  Scott is also a successful inventor himself and holds a patent on his invention.  Scott came up with his invention while in law school and successfully managed to manufacture, package and promote his invention himself.  He was also able to get his invention into Wal-Mart, Bass Pro Shops and Cabellas.  Given his unique experience as a successful inventor and his focus on litigation and business matters he is capable of providing a rare resource for inventors seeking to commercialize their inventions.  Scott graduated from the University of Central Florida in 1995. Then continued his education at Barry University School of Law, where he graduated in 2002. That same year, Scott was admitted to practice by the Florida Bar Association and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.  Scott enjoys practicing law in the community in which he was raised, but when he’s not working, he enjoys golf, fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities.

 

Mark Malek

Mark focuses his practice on representing clients before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and counseling inventors and businesses on various intellectual property strategies. Mark is a registered patent attorney and admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  In addition to representing inventors Mark also represents business with respect to filing and obtaining trademarks and other trademark matters.  Mark also focuses his practice on licensing his client’s intellectual property, and has worked a great deal with international clients.  Mr. Malek received a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Dayton in 1997, a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Orlando in 1999, and a Juris Doctorate degree from Barry University School of Law in 2002. Mark is a member of the Florida Bar (2002), and is amitted to practice in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (2000), the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (2002), the United States Court of Appeals, Federal Circuit (2004) the District of Columbia Bar (2005) and the United States Court of Appeals, 11th Circuit (2005).  Mark currently serves on the executive committe of the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of East Florida and was past chairman of the Board of Directors, Mark is involved with the Florida Bar Justice Teaching program, and is a parishoner at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Mark is married to his wife Aileen and they have two young sons.

 

Gene Quinn

Gene is a US Patent Attorney and Law Professor. He also teaches the most popular patent bar review course in the US, which requires him to stay on the cutting edge of patent practice and procedure. Gene’s particular specialty is in the area of strategic patent consulting, patent application drafting, patent prosecution, technology licensing and litigation. In addition to representing inventors Gene also represents business with respect to filing and obtaining trademarks and other trademark matters.  Gene is also a member of the Board of Directors of the United Inventors Association, and is the inventor of a unique invention mining and patent drafting system, known as the Invent + Patent System, on which he has several patent applications pending. Gene is also known by many as “The IPWatchdog,” having started the widely popular intellectual property website IPWatchdog.com in 1999. At least in part due to the notoriety he developed through IPWatchdog.com, Gene has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the LA Times, CNN Money and various other newspapers and magazines worldwide.
