Joseph AllenJoseph Allen is a 30-year veteran of national efforts to foster public/private sector commercialization partnerships, and author of numerous articles on technology management for national publications. He served as a Professional Staff Member on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee with former Senator Birch Bayh (D-IN), and was instrumental in working behind the scenes to ensure passage of the historic Bayh-Dole Act. He is our resident Bayh-Dole expert and commercialization of university research.

 

Bernie KnightBernard Knight is a career coach and counselor, and a licensed professional mental health counselor in Washington, D.C. He is also an expert witness available to testify and consult on matters of patent office procedure. Most recently Bernie was a partner practicing complex patent litigation in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP from 2013-2017.  Prior to joining McDermott, Bernie served as General Counsel for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from 2010 to 2013. Bernie previously served as Acting General Counsel of the U.S. Treasury at the height of the financial crisis. He is our resident expert on law practice management and executive leadership.

 

James Pooley is one of the world’s foremost experts in trade secret law and management, and is our resident expert on trade secrets and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Jim is a sought-after advisor, IP litigator, and information security expert with nearly 40 years of experience. His many leadership roles include his tenure as president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and as Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, where he was responsible for the international patent system.

 

Joseph Robinson is a partner at Troutman Sanders. Joe has over 20 years of experience in all aspects of intellectual property law. He focuses his practice in the pharmaceutical, life sciences, biotechnology, and medical device fields. He has served as litigation counsel in a variety of patent and trademark disputes in many different jurisdictions. Joe has experience representing clients before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and is one of the two primary authors of the Federal Circuit Review. Joe is one of our resident experts on the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

 

Robert Schaffer is an intellectual property partner at Troutman Sanders. Bob has more than 30 years of experience to IP counseling and litigation. He regularly handles complex and high-profile domestic and international patent portfolios, intellectual property agreements and licensing. Bob has experience representing clients before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and is one of the two primary authors of the Federal Circuit Review. Bob is one of our resident experts on the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
