Evolution of Tech: Willis Carrier helps us beat the summer heat with the invention of air conditioning

In 1902, shortly after joining the Buffalo Forge Company, Willis Carrier had a momentary insight while standing on a train station in Pittsburgh, which would lead him to develop his first air conditioner system. The oft-repeated story of this discovery involves something of a paradox: Carrier, surrounded by fog, realized that he could dry air by adding water to warm, humid air to create fog. He realized that if he saturated the air with water, he could control the temperature of that saturated air by passing it through a cool water spray that caused the moisture of hot, humid air to condense and leave the air stream. Although the cooling of air had been demonstrated by Gorrie, Franklin and others, Carrier solved the problem of removing humidity from the air.

LG Patent Apps Point to Electric Cars and Solar Cell Manufacturing

LG has also made forays into the realm of alternative energies to design and develop solar cells to be manufactured by the company. One of these technologies has been filed with the USPTO through U.S. Patent Application No. 20140357008, entitled Method of Manufacturing Solar Cell and Method of Forming Doping Region. The method of manufacturing a solar cell claimed by this patent involves forming a doping region with portions containing different doping concentrations which are simultaneously formed while forming an electrode to the solar cell. This innovation was pursued to improve upon conventional solar cell manufacturing methods by providing a simpler means for forming a doping region which results in less risk of the forming of a manufacturing defect.

The Evolution of Air Conditioning Technology

Evidence about man’s attempts to provide some sort of cooling technology to beat the heat in warmer climates extends back almost 2,000 years. Early air conditioning systems from 2nd century China, for example, involved a manually-powered rotary fan designed to force air through a room. In 3rd century Rome, a system was developed for the importing of ice from the mountain regions via donkey train to cool the garden of Emperor Elagabalus… Another attempt at improving air conditioning technology arose in response to one of the sadder days in the history of the United States. On July 2nd, 1881, U.S. President James Garfield was shot by an assassin and passed away more than two months later, on September 19th of that year. In order to provide comfort to the commander in chief during his final weeks, engineers from the U.S. Navy constructed a cooling unit that blows hot air over a water-soaked cloth, forcing cool air to travel underneath the hot air.
