Avanci’s new 5G Vehicle Program – A One Stop Shop?

While the 5G program launch is a step into the right direction, the biggest challenge will be the new royalty rate. The 5G program is targeted at automotive OEMs, who if they join within the next 6 months (or before they ship their first 5G vehicle, whichever is later) will get access to all members’ cellular SEPs for a discounted rate of $29 per vehicle. After the 6 months the rate increases to $32 per vehicle for late joiners. While the whole automotive market will be happy about a SEP market share of 80%-83% (table 1), the new royalty rates will likely be discussed with a lot more controversy.

Microsoft, Toyota announce new licensing agreement for connected car IP

The licensing agreement, which covers patents directed at connected car technologies, is the latest partnership between these two companies seeking to increase entertainment and autonomous tech platforms within vehicles.,, In recent months, Microsoft has been ramping up licensing programs seeking to encourage the use of its patented technologies by auto manufacturers. At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company announced the Microsoft Connected Car Platform, a development platform for connected car technologies using the Azure cloud.

Open Innovation for the Electric Vehicle Market

Ford and Tesla have offered their patents for licensing in the hope of increasing electric vehicle (EV) adoption and improving the supporting infrastructure. In contrast, Toyota is banking on fuel cell vehicle (FCV) technology. The broader automotive innovation game is being won by “connected cars” at the moment because consumers are unwilling to pay more for physical car features, but they are influenced by software related innovations. Technology companies are now entering the car sector with their own EVs. This is leading to competition to access the talent needed to drive innovation and a willingness to open up technology investments. By opening their patent portfolio, Ford could be sharing their existing inventions in the hope that their technology is adopted more quickly and of acquiring the talent needed to be at the forefront of innovation.
