Identifying the Crucial Qualities of Great IP Managers

IPWatchdog readers know the importance of capturing IP, whether it is patents, trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets. This article isn’t detailing technical tips for filing patents or how to corner a strategic area of the market; the difference between a good and a great IP Manager is leadership. Capturing IP is one of many responsibilities of the IP Manager that falls in the middle of functional silos within technology companies, resulting in cross-functional barriers that must be navigated to achieve any measure of success. While the goal is to create a strong IP portfolio, the business is people. Evo of Tech: Harold Froehlich invents Alvin deep sea submersible while working at General Mills labs

Interestingly enough, the world of deep sea exploration actually owes a great deal of gratitude to a major American cereal company for providing a major advance in submersible vehicle technology. Sunday, September 24th, marked the 54th anniversary of the issue of patent covering an underseas vehicle technology issued to Harold Froehlich, then an engineer at General Mills. This May, Froehlich was included among the inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame’s 2017 class for his work in developing the deep sea human occupied vehicle Alvin.

Finjan forms new subsidiary Finjan Blue to execute web security patent acquisition agreement with IBM

East Palo Alto, CA-based web security firm Finjan Holdings recently filed a Form 8-K with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which disclosed a patent assignment agreement made with Armonk, NY-based information technology giant IBM (NYSE:IBM). Under the terms of the agreement, Finjan Blue, a newly formed subsidiary of Finjan, will acquire a series of IBM security-related patents with potential pathways for the IBM and Finjan to work collaboratively on development of those patented technologies.
