As the new year begins, I’ve been reflecting on what makes patent practitioners highly valuable to their clients. In a prior IPWatchdog article, I asserted that one should aspire to practice as an intellectual property counselor—who leverages patent prosecution as one strategic tool among many, rather than narrowly conceptualizing his or her role. What about the day-to-day acts of preparing and prosecuting a patent application? Here are ten concrete steps IP counselors can take to advance their clients’ interests and distinguish themselves from their peers.

Gene Quinn, has been named to the 2018 IAM Strategy 300, which recognizes The World’s Leading IP Strategists. This marks the second consecutive year Gene has been recognized by IAM as one of the top IP strategists in the world.

Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, LLP announced trecently that Weber Hsiao has joined the firm as a senior attorney in its Intellectual Property department and Patent practice group in the firm’s Grand Rapids office. His arrival follows the recent additions of IP partners Tim Flory and Peter Cummings, who joined the firm earlier this year.

 Hogan Lovells announced that it has appointed Burkhart Goebel as the new global head of the firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) practice. Dr. Goebel will begin his role in the position as of 1 July.

Leading global law firm Dechert LLP announced this week that Chad E. Davis, Ph.D. and Katherine A. (“Kassie”) Helm, Ph.D. have joined its intellectual property practice in Boston and New York, respectively, as partners and also further expanding Dechert’s global life sciences capabilities. Davis utilizes his extensive scientific background in chemistry to structure strategic, complex patent portfolios – supporting clients through each phase of the patent process, from patent procurement to post-grant challenge and infringement analysis. Helm focuses her practice on representing life sciences clients in complex patent litigation and related intellectual property, antitrust, healthcare and international arbitration matters involving her scientific, medical and technical expertise.  

Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP announced the addition of Deepro R. Mukerjee and Lance Soderstrom as partners in its Intellectual Property (IP) practice group in New York and Dr. Jitendra “Jitty” Malik as a partner in the Intellectual Property (IP) group in Charlotte. Mukerjee, Dr. Malik, and Soderstrom all join Katten from Alston & Bird LLP.

Dowd Scheffel PLLC is pleased to announce its founding by Matthew J. Dowd and Robert J. Scheffel.

Polsinelli announced the addition of prominent technology and intellectual property attorney William A. Tanenbaum to its New York office.  Tanenbaum joins the firm’s Technology Transactions & Data Privacy group and will serve as Co-Chair of the Healthcare Technology & Innovation Group.  His practice focuses on transactions, litigation, and strategic counseling in the intellectual property, technology, cybersecurity, health care IT and IP, financial services IT and IP, outsourcing and data-driven business sectors.       

Alston & Bird has named partner Natalie Clayton as the head of its Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical & Life Sciences Patent Litigation Team, effective immediately. Clayton has more than 10 years of experience guiding industry-leading companies through sophisticated patent litigation, as well as complex Food and Drug Administration regulatory matters.

Honigman announced this week that it added two new partners to its Intellectual Property department. John Chau joins the firm’s Patent practice group in Bloomfield Hills and Mary Hyde enters the Intellectual Property Litigation practice group in Ann Arbor. Additionally, Cristina Almendarez joins as an associate in the Intellectual Property Litigation practice group in the firm’s Chicago office.

Cole Schotz P.C. is continuing the expansion of its Intellectual Property department with the addition of Special Counsel Marcella Bodner in New Jersey. Ms. Bodner has nearly 20 years of experience formulating both offensive and defensive intellectual property strategies.

Fish & Richardson announced that Elizabeth King has joined the firm’s Houston office as Of Counsel in its Trademark and Copyright Group. King has nearly 25 years of experience practicing law, the last 20 of which have been focused on domestic and international trademark law; she is also a well-known expert on non-traditional trademark protection strategies.
