Gene Quinn, has been named to the 2018 IAM Strategy 300, which recognizes The World’s Leading IP Strategists. This marks the second consecutive year Gene has been recognized by IAM as one of the top IP strategists in the world.

One of the most common questions I receive from these individuals is this: “Once I pass the patent bar exam, how do I learn to actually start practicing?” Like so many things in life, there is no substitute for experience. Over the years I’ve advised many in various settings, and invariably as I speak with one person there will be others who begin eavesdropping. As a result, I thought I would put together a top 10 list of things that new patent practitioners should know as they prepare to embark on a career as a patent practitioner.

Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, LLP announced trecently that Weber Hsiao has joined the firm as a senior attorney in its Intellectual Property department and Patent practice group in the firm’s Grand Rapids office. His arrival follows the recent additions of IP partners Tim Flory and Peter Cummings, who joined the firm earlier this year.

Harness Dickey announced this week that patent attorney Scott Yackey has joined the firm’s Metro Dallas office. Yackey holds experience in many areas of patent law, including patent prosecution and litigation. Yackey’s practice with Harness Dickey will focus on patent prosecution and litigation support, including proceedings held before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.

Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP announced the addition of Deepro R. Mukerjee and Lance Soderstrom as partners in its Intellectual Property (IP) practice group in New York and Dr. Jitendra “Jitty” Malik as a partner in the Intellectual Property (IP) group in Charlotte. Mukerjee, Dr. Malik, and Soderstrom all join Katten from Alston & Bird LLP.

FisherBroyles LLP, the nation’s first and world’s largest cloud-based distributed law firm partnership, announced today that John Eisenhart, Elizabeth Haanes, James W. Hill, Keats Quinalty and Cara Crowley-Weber have joined the firm as partners and members of the Patent Prosecution team, which is part of the firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) practice group.

Honigman announced this week that it added two new partners to its Intellectual Property department. John Chau joins the firm’s Patent practice group in Bloomfield Hills and Mary Hyde enters the Intellectual Property Litigation practice group in Ann Arbor. Additionally, Cristina Almendarez joins as an associate in the Intellectual Property Litigation practice group in the firm’s Chicago office.

Cole Schotz P.C. is continuing the expansion of its Intellectual Property department with the addition of Special Counsel Marcella Bodner in New Jersey. Ms. Bodner has nearly 20 years of experience formulating both offensive and defensive intellectual property strategies.

Patterson Thuente IP has named patent attorney Christian Girtz as a partner in the firm.  He handles patent preparation and prosecution for clients in the fields of computer software, communications, and Internet and electronic commerce.

Conley Rose, PC announced the promotion of Darlene F. Ghavimi to the position of Principal for 2018.  Ms. Ghavimi primarily represents clients in contentious and complex patent and trademark litigation.  She also has extensive experience in patent and trademark preparation and prosecution, infringement opinions, licensing, technology transfer, and client counseling related to patent and trademark issues.  

On Jan. 25, 2018, Munck Wilson Mandala elected intellectual property associate Neil Ferrari as a new partner, effective January 1, 2018.  Mr. Ferrari is a member of MWM’s technology/intellectual property law group and has a broad range of legal experience in patent matters. “Neil is one of the hardest working attorneys in our firm and I am pleased to see his commitment lead to this next phase of his legal career with us,” said William Munck, MWM’s managing partner.

Akin Gump has announced that Steven D. Maslowski has been named co-head of the firm’s intellectual property practice. Mr. Maslowski will transition into the role of sole leader of the practice during the next several months, after which time Steven M. Zager, who had been serving as the sole head of the practice since 2005, will step down to return to his full-time practice of law.

Orrick recently announced the promotion of 19 lawyers to the firm’s partnership, effective January 1, 2018 including 7 attorneys in Litigation and IP. Those being made partner include Mel Bostwick, Karsten Faulhaber, Brian Goldman, Jacob Heath, Alvin Lee, Emily Tabatabai, and Scott Ward.

Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C. announces the election of five new directors – Daniel Gajewski, Miklos Gaszner, M.D., Ph.D., Adam LaRock, Trey Powers, Ph.D., and Deirdre Wells – effective January 1, 2018.
