Peter McLaughlin Joins Burns & Levinson

Burns & Levinson announced that Peter McLaughlin, a highly respected cybersecurity and data privacy attorney, has joined the firm as a partner in its rapidly expanding Intellectual Property (IP) Group. McLaughlin has nearly 20 years of experience advising U.S. and international clients on their handling of corporate and personal information and complying with cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection standards. He was previously of counsel with DLA Piper in Boston.

With seven years of in-house experience, McLaughlin focuses his practice on providing practical guidance to clients using his broad knowledge of U.S. and European privacy rules, particularly as these relate to new technologies and business models. For example, he has served as the former assistant general counsel for privacy & security and global privacy director of a Fortune 20 healthcare company, where he developed and orchestrated the firm’s global privacy and data protection program.

In private practice, McLaughlin represents clients across industry sectors with respect to rules governing personal information; he counsels organizations with respect to IT transactions, the Internet of Things, novel data use and data sharing models, and security incidents; and he guides clients in responding to regulators such as the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and state attorneys general.

“Privacy and data security are issues that our clients across all industries are grappling with, and Peter brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our clients. We are thrilled to have him join our world-class IP team. He is the fifth IP partner we have brought on in four months, and we are committed to continuing to add high-level talent to expand our IP capabilities to meet the growing demand from our clients,” said David P. Rosenblatt, managing partner at Burns & Levinson.

McLaughlin received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1993 and his B.A. from Columbia University in 1986.
