(Philadelphia) – Akin Gump has announced that Steven Maslowski (pictured left) has been named co-head of the firm’s intellectual property practice. Mr. Maslowski will transition into the role of sole leader of the practice during the next several months, after which time Steven Zager, who had been serving as the sole head of the practice since 2005, will step down to return to his full-time practice of law.
Mr. Maslowski has substantial trial experience in many high-profile, “bet-the-company” patent cases. He focuses on litigating patent infringement disputes in the life sciences, including highly complex biological and chemical inventions, such as monoclonal antibodies, small molecule drugs and polymer compositions, as well as medical devices. He has also been counsel in numerous inter partes review proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Among other recognitions, in September 2017 Mr. Maslowski was selected by the editorial board of Philadelphia Business Journal as an honoree in the category of Intellectual Property Litigation for the publication’s inaugural Best of the Bar awards.
“With the Supreme Court expected to rule this year on a significant matter pertaining to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and the Federal Circuit having already done so, 2018 will be an exciting time for IP practitioners,” said Mr. Maslowski. “I am thrilled to be taking on this new role leading Akin Gump’s superb team of intellectual property lawyers, and I want to express my appreciation to Steve for his many years of successful leadership of the group.”
Mr. Zager, who has litigated intellectual property disputes across the United States and has represented clients in a dozen different countries, added, “Steve is an accomplished IP lawyer who has been recognized for his many talents. I look forward to returning fulltime to my practice, and am delighted that our IP practice will be in such capable hands.”
