Techtronic Industries North America, Inc. is seeking an Intellectual Property Engineer/Data Scientist – Analytics & Special Projects

(TTI) is seeking an Intellectual Property Engineer/Data Scientist – Analytics & Special Projects. This position reports to the Group Chief IP Counsel of the IP_HQ team and will be located at our Group Headquarters site in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  This is a full-timepermanent position.

Our IP_HQ shared service team provides IP services to our talented IP colleagues and internal clients at TTI’s business units around the world. We’re looking for an exceptional IP engineer/data scientist to help us fulfill this mission. The successful candidate will analyze complex data sets to provide critical guidance to stakeholders, as well as illuminate opportunities to increase the return on TTI’s investment in innovation. Utilizing software and project execution skills, this position also will partner with the business units on special projects directed to substantive IP and legal matters, development of collaborative tools, and process improvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze internal and external IP data gathered from disparate sources, providing actionable insights to guide TTI stakeholders, including IP colleagues and business leaders.
  • Serve as TTI’s go-to expert on IP analytics and the use of externally sourced IP software. Execute analyses upon request and train others in use of software tools.
  • Partner with IP colleagues, finance leads, and innovators on diverse initiatives, such as related to patent filing and prosecution, portfolio development and analysis, patent searching, product clearance, invention harvesting, competitive intelligence, brand protection, legal spend tracking, litigation, licensing, monetization, and M&A transactions.
  • Systematize reporting processes to convey relevant data and learnings across multiple teams.
  • Drive enhanced collaboration through use of technology and knowledge management strategies, including within TTI and in cooperation with outside counsel and other IP service providers.
  • Assist with evaluation and selection of outside technology vendors, as well as onboarding and maintenance of selected offerings.
  • Engage closely with TTI sites in Greenville, SC, Charlotte, NC, Brookfield, WI, Europe, and China, through virtual and in-person engagements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in computer science or electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering, though other technical degrees will be considered.
  • 4+ years of hands-on, tactical IP experience in areas such as patent filing and prosecution, portfolio development and analysis, patent searching, product clearance, invention harvesting, competitive intelligence, brand protection, litigation, licensing, monetization, and M&A transactions.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively with local business units and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Fast learner, critical thinker, and creative problem solver who can navigate complex technical, legal, and business-related subject matter.
  • Tech-savvy, including proficiency using Excel and other relevant software on at least an intermediate level.
  • Proven track record employing IP software tools to draw out granular and broader insights to guide IP strategies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to integrate detailed and big-picture thinking, and to help transform concepts into realities.
  • Able to multitask in a fast-paced environment and open to tackling new types of projects.
  • Humble, curious, capable, and driven professional who thrives on teamwork, challenging projects, and career development opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in:

  • Law firm, corporate in-house, or IP analytics provider settings.
  • Analyzing complex, wide-ranging IP data sets and spotting relevant trends.
  • Understanding IP-related metrics, including financial data, and how to effectively communicate them to stakeholders.
  • Designing and implementing collaborative tools, such as web portals, dashboards, and reporting mechanisms for knowledge management.
  • Utilizing machine learning and big data tools.
  • Planning and executing projects to timely provide high-impact deliverables.
  • Training personnel in use of analytics software.

Other Skills:

  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office agent registration is desirable, but not required.
  • Fluency in Mandarin or Cantonese is a plus, but not required.
