Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP is searching for an Intellectual Property Technical Consultant for either its San Diego, California, or McLean, Virginia office.

Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, an international law firm with a particular focus on the technology & media, energy, financial, and real estate & construction sectors and recognized as one of the most innovative law firms and one of the top firms for client service, is searching for an Intellectual Property Technical Consultant for either its San Diego, California, or McLean, Virginia office.

Duties Include:

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to developing and implementing patent filing strategies; conducting interviews with clients to obtain invention disclosures; preparing patent applications under the supervision of patent attorneys; analyzing office actions and preparing responses under the supervision of patent attorneys; conducting interviews with examiners at the United States Patent and Trademark Office; assisting in formulating and preparing infringement and validity opinions, working on patent post-grant proceedings, assisting in patent and other litigation, and supporting intellectual property licensing and other transactions; drafting scientific and technical documents; managing a docket with multiple clients and deadlines; conducting patent related legal and technical research and analysis using available resources, and other projects as assigned.

This role will collaborate closely with attorneys, patent agents, technical consultants, and professional staff. Strict adherence to the ethical requirements as set forth by the Firm’s professional liability insurance is required.

Qualifications Required:

The qualified candidate must have a background in chemistry and/or pharmaceutical experience (brand or generic). While not required, a PhD in organic chemistry (or biology) is preferred. The candidate must be eligible to sit for the patent agent examination. The qualified candidate will also have experience in organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, synthesis and formulation of pharmaceuticals, and biology. Two plus years of experience preparing and prosecuting patents is required.

Successful candidates must possess excellent attention to detail and strong interpersonal communication skills; be a business-minded and highly motivated team player; have experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to quickly grasp new technologies; possess a very strong ability to write scientific and technical documents in clear, concise English; and possess the analytical and technical skills necessary to conduct complex and detailed analysis of patent related matters. The ability to effectively manage multiple matters with various deadlines is also required.
