Arthur Daemmrich is director of the Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes (CSPO) at Arizona State University. Located in the nation’s capital, CSPO develops and shares methods for real-time technology assessment, responsible innovation, and community consultation on emerging technology, biomedicine and scientific knowledge that challenges the status quo. Members of the consortium collaborate to rethink the role of science in society. As Director, Daemmrich leads the intellectual network in fostering new policies, advancing the consortium’s work in participatory technology assessment and engaging in important discussions about emerging science and technology.

Prior to joining CSPO, Daemmrich was Director of the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the Smithsonian Institution. He has led research projects into the history of pharmaceutical innovation and regulation, chemical risk, and healthcare systems, and is currently researching the history of patent licensing. Daemmrich has published in the fields of science and technology studies, history of technology, medical sociology, and business policy. Previously an associate professor at the University of Kansas, assistant professor at Harvard Business School and a visiting professor at the China Europe International Business School, he holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Daemmrich’s scholarly work analyzes the emergence of technology-based industries, explores the relationship between regulation and innovation, and compares innovation systems internationally. He is the author of Pharmacopolitics: Drug Regulation in the United States and Germany and over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and teaching cases.

Eleven Million Patents: Milestones in the History of Invention

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued its 11 millionth patent today, May 11, 2021. America’s first (unnumbered) patent was issued in July of 1790, and patents were numbered consecutively starting in 1836. From there, the pace of patenting accelerated, with 100,000 patents issued by early 1870 and the 1 millionth issued in 1911. Since 2010, the USPTO has issued an average of over 300,000 new patents annually, as inventors and firms around the world have look to the United States as the premier global patent location.
