Thomas Macchio is an Associate with Venable, LLP who helps clients explore options to protect their intellectual property and technological breakthroughs. Thomas studied mechanical engineering and applied mechanics before law school and relies on his scientific background when advising clients on new technology. As a research assistant at Fordham University School of Law, he conducted legal research on the relationship between retracted scientific papers and patent applications, rejections, and amendments pertaining to similar topics. He gained valuable experience at Venable’s four-week virtual bootcamp program, conducting legal research on various patent prosecutorial and litigation topics, drafting expert opinion legal memos, and completing a mock corporate share acquisition.

At the University of Pennsylvania, Thomas won the Francis G. Tatnall Prize for an outstanding project showing ingenuity, proficiency, and usefulness in the Senior Mechanical and Product Design Competition. He assisted in fluid flow visualization, mechanical design, electronics optimization, and fabrication of an autonomous maritime vessel that allowed for better data collection in coastal reef environments.
