For many companies seeking worldwide patent protection, the best course of action is to file a single International Application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This strategy is preferable for many filers because it puts off decision-making for up to 30 months regarding the specific countries to enter the national phase.
But though there are numerous benefits, there are also costs. The PCT process is not cheap, and it can be more economical to pursue patent protection directly, particularly when protection is only necessary in a few countries.
