U.S. Senator for the State of Hawaii

Senator Mazie Hirono has served as the junior United States Senator from Hawaii since 2013.

Senator Hirono, a member of the Democratic Party, previously served as a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives from 1985 to 1994, and then as the Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii from 1994 to 2002. Hirono was the Democratic nominee for Governor of Hawaii in 2002 but was defeated by Republican Linda Lingle. She then ran in Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District for a seat in the United States House of Representatives, where she served from 2007 to 2013.

With the retirement of Senator Daniel Akaka, Hirono was elected to the Senate in 2012 and sworn in as Hawaii’s first female senator and the country’s first Asian-American woman senator.
