Lawyers are constantly bombarded by challenges that naturally create fear and anxiety. Many lawyers don’t recognize these fears and fail effectively to deal with them. This causes many lawyers to be unhappy and to provide less than outstanding service to their clients. I identify many of these looming fears and present some practical tips for dealing with them… The consequences of these fears include drinking too much alcohol to relax, being snippy or yelling at people at work, eating too much and getting poor sleep.   You can deal with this stress in much more productive ways and be happier doing so.

Thibodeau has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group as a partner, based in Boston and New Hampshire. Peter Yim and Brian Ho have joined the Firm’s San Francisco office and Christopher Eide joined the Silicon Valley office. Attorney Flynt Strean, a veteran intellectual property attorney, has joined Womble Carlyle as a Partner in its Charlotte office. Flynt’s IP practice includes, IP portfolio management; U.S. and foreign patent application preparation and prosecution; Patent noninfringement and invalidity investigations; and IP due diligence. Flynt’s clients include companies in the radio frequency identification (RFID) device, mechanical and electromechanical component, waterproof fabric laminate, agricultural device and healthcare management system industries.

On June 27, 2017, Crowell & Moring LLP announced the arrival of partners Kent B. Goss and Valerie M. Goo to the firm’s Litigation Group. Goss and Goo are recognized trial lawyers who have a distinguished record in representing clients in commercial litigation and intellectual property matters, including eight- and nine-figure disputes. Their arrival expands on the litigation capabilities of Crowell & Moring’s nationally recognized group to serve clients in California and across the United States.  Both lawyers join the firm from Orrick.

Core values are key to avoiding ethical violations. This is because most ethics violations are not intentional. They occur because decisions are being made based on the wrong values (i.e., increased revenues alone) or on emotion (i.e., fear that taking more time to evaluate will be disastrous). Establishing sound core values and strong decision making emotional intelligence skills will help ensure that you do not commit an unintended ethics violation.

Olga Katsnelson has joined Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie as an associate in the Intellectual Property practice group. Her practice focuses on patent prosecution, patents and prior art searches and evaluations.

Burns & Levinson announced this week that George Chaclas has joined the firm as a partner in its Intellectual Property (IP) Group. Chaclas, who has over 19 years of experience developing IP strategy for Fortune 100 and industry-leading companies, world-renowned academic institutions, startups, and entrepreneurs, was previously with Adler Pollock & Sheehan in Providence, RI. Also joining the firm from Adler Pollock are associate Daniel McGrath and patent agent Katherine Larson.

Hoilihan Lokey adds four new Officers in Chicago, Atlanta, and Houston, expanding their service offering to include Trademarks, Brands, and Copyrights. John A. Hudson and Brent Reynolds Sr. have joined the practice as a Director and Vice President, respectively; Scott Womack will join the firm early next month as a Vice President. Mr. Hudson and Mr. Womack will be based in Atlanta, and Mr. Reynolds is based in Houston.

Patent lawyers are labeled as science geeks and somehow that has been associated with us having less interest in the emotional side of things.   As a former USPTO general counsel, I have seen more than a few patent lawyers get emotional about topics ranging from the meaning of inequitable conduct to the ability of the USPTO Director to raise fees.   However, in interactions with other people or in responses at meetings or public events we all need a healthy dose of emotional intelligence to be persuasive.
