Morency brings more than 20 years of experience to the firm’s growing Intellectual Property Department, which is comprised of more than 120 attorneys, patent agents and scientists coast to coast.

Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP announced that Paul J. Andre and Jonathan S. Caplan have been named co-chairs of the firm’s expanding intellectual property practice. Mr. Andre focuses his practice on litigating intellectual property disputes involving complex technology, with a particular emphasis on the life sciences, computer science, and the electrical arts. Mr. Caplan represents clients in patent litigation, counseling, and prosecution, as well as in antitrust litigation and general corporate matters involving the acquisition, sale or licensing of intellectual property rights.

Anton N. Handal joins Greenspoon Marder as a shareholder in the Intellectual Property practice. Mr. Handal has multi-jurisdictional litigation experience before Federal, State and Administrative Courts with an understanding of case management, trial techniques, discovery, motion work and case presentation. Notably, he recently litigated an International Trade Commission Section 337 action to a successful completion in Washington, D.C. As former CEO of a start-up technology company, he has secured patents, directed financial transactions, negotiated contracts, raised capital and handled communications with shareholder/investors.

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP announced that Henry Lebowitz has joined the firm as a partner in New York and a member of the Corporate Intellectual Property Group. Mr. Lebowitz’s practice will focus on IP and technology aspects of mergers and acquisitions, financings and capital markets as well as data licensing, healthcare and life sciences licensing, joint ventures and other IP transactions.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is seeking nominations for the 2017 National Medal of Technology and Innovation. The medal is presented each year by the President of the United States and is this country’s highest award for technological achievement. The deadline for nominations is April 7, 2017.

The number of patents granted to US companies by the European Patent Office (EPO) grew by 46.7% in 2016, the highest increase in ten years, and a new record high. Last year US companies were granted 21,939 patents by the EPO (2015: 14,955).

Allison Kerndt has joined the firm as a shareholder in its rapidly growing Intellectual Property Department.
