Fish & Richardson announced that it has obtained clemency for five pro bono clients the firm represented through the firm’s participation in The Clemency Project. The Clemency Project is a major initiative launched by the American Bar Association and various other public interest groups in cooperation with the Department of Justice to seek sentence commutations from President Obama for non-violent, low level drug offenders who have already served at least 10 years of lengthy federal prison terms. Fish attorneys contributed over 1,800 pro bono hours to help identify potential candidates for clemency and to prepare individual clemency petitions for those eligible prisoners. Three of those commutations were announced in the past two months; two were announced last week.

Silicon Valley intellectual property boutique Fernando & Partners, LLP has joined Squire Patton Boggs in Palo Alto, the firm announced, bolstering its expertise in electrical/electronic devices and systems and software. Ron Fernando joins Squire Patton Boggs as a partner. In addition to his legal qualifications, Mr. Fernando holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering, and he has spent the last 15 years preparing and prosecuting key patent applications for some of Silicon Valley’s best known companies.

On January 17, 2017, Orrick announced the admission of 18 lawyers to the firm’s partnership, effective January 1, 2017. Of the 18 new partners, 3 of them focus on Intellectual Property matters: Alyssa Caridis, Jordan Coyle and Catherine Lui.

Venable LLP, an American Lawyer Global 100 law firm, announced that Justin E. Pierce has been named chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Division. He succeeds William D. Coston, who previously held the position. Mr. Coston will resume his full-time practice, focusing on litigation and counseling in antitrust and intellectual property matters.

Thomas Anderton has joined the Intellectual Property & Technology Practice at Squire Patton Boggs as of counsel in San Francisco. Mr. Anderton has extensive life sciences experience, with a particular focus on biopharma IP portfolios.
